I had it in my mind to write something else today. I wanted to explore how the media and today’s politicians might react to an announcement that the Christ child was born this day in Bethlehem and that the news of this significant event was announced by lowly sheep herders who had been told it by radiant beings that appeared in the night sky….
But, there is something more troubling on my mind – the murder of two New York City Police Officers. From the promise of peace on earth and good will toward men, to this place we have traveled. How did we get here from there? We all have our theories. I believe we did not just happen upon this path, but have been following it for a long time. Long ago we started walking along it looking into places we should not have been looking and contemplating what should not have been contemplated and then we started jogging and running and now we are outright sprinting toward a a dark place.
How does it end up that two police officers working overtime to protect the residents of a city can be ambushed and murdered while sitting in their patrol car? First, we have a media that is driven by an ideology which has nothing to do with seeking and reporting the truth. With that thought on my mind, it is not hard to imagine how the report of the birth of Jesus Christ would be heard in the news today. The truth of the matter would be hard to come by because every piece of the story that failed to support the ideological end would simply be left out. It would be buried and the people would be warned away from any source that might report a different version of the prevailing story. Fortunately, for those of us to whom it matters there is always an accurate account of the events. We just need to seek it out.
In virtually every case used by the media to support their ideological bend, they have been wrong. They have been proven wrong. They have been caught being intentionally wrong. Still they go on reporting to a mass of people who look no further for the truth and believe what they have been conditioned to believe. Sadly, there are people among any group who can be swayed into committing atrocious acts while feeling he or she is accomplishing something good. Then, the media makes martyrs of them. Universities ask them to speak at commencements.
Then there are the politicians. The ones who want power at any cost and too often worsen situations by pushing in a direction of division rather than one of healing. I wonder how the media and politicians would have handled news that a despot was having his army kill young children in an attempt to eliminate the “new born King.” Probably about the same as they have reacted to Islamists killing Christian children who refused to convert to Islam, or Israelis who defend themselves against those who desire their destruction. You know, compromise a little, give a little, and it will be fine. Just reach across to the other side.
It is a sad day in the United States of America when a line can be drawn from the President to the Attorney General, through a collection of other weak willed politicians, to those who have made a living spreading lies, hatred and death directly to two murdered police officers. We are in a dark place now. A place not safe for any child and the people most responsible for our safety are the reason.
One day, I sat down with my writing pad and started one of those brainstorming charts. The one where you write a name in the center then draw direct connections from that one to other names. And from every name, you draw direct lines to other names. You continue until you run out of names and organizations. With just the names and organizations you know without further research that directly connect to the man in the middle, you soon begin to understand how far we have traveled down the wrong path and why our country is in danger. We have traveled a far distance from Bethlehem.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)
700 hundred years following Isaiah’s prophecy, the shepherds reported:
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2: 13-14 (NIV)
